Kaieteur News- After nearly five months, Adonika Aulder, the wife of former Assistant Police Commissioner Calvin Brutus, has not yet returned to Guyana from the United States.
Her attorneys stated on Thursday that she has applied for a US passport that will take six to eight weeks to be processed. Back in December 2024, Aulder, who was heavily pregnant at the time, was allowed to leave the country by Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. She was due to return by December 18, 2024, to face charges related to alleged financial crimes. While she has appeared virtually to date, she has not returned to court in person.
Aulder is facing two charges of money laundering. She is accused of acquiring GY$352,082,315 from her company’s bank account at Republic Bank in December 2023, “knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe that the funds were derived from criminal activity.”
On Thursday, Aulder once again appeared virtually, while with her husband, Calvin Brutus and co-accused Kevin George, appeared in person as the court moved forward with statements and further disclosure in the matter.
During proceedings, Magistrate McGusty inquired about Aulder’s return to Guyana. Her attorney, Dominick Bess, informed the court that she had applied for a U.S. passport and the defence currently has in their possession a copy of the receipt for the passport. The prosecution then requested that the receipt be submitted to the court. Magistrate McGusty granted the request and asked for a specific timeline regarding the processing of the passport and Aulder’s expected return to the country.
Brutus, when permitted to speak, explained that the passport process will take six to eight weeks. He also added that the processing of the passport is appointment-based, dependent on available dates.
Magistrate McGusty still questioning the lengthy timeline and ordered that copies of the passport receipt to be submitted to the court. Meanwhile, in the related case involving Brutus who is facing 261 financial crime charges, and George, the prosecution admitted that some key bank documents were still outstanding. Brutus’s attorney, Everton Lammy-Singh, expressed concern over the delays, stating, “They should not be charging anyone if they don’t have their evidence in order.” He further argued that Brutus should not be required to make frequent court appearances given the prosecution’s lack of preparedness and requested that his client’s appearances be adjusted to once per month. Magistrate McGusty agreed to the defence’s request. The matter was then adjourned to May 16, 2025.
