Kaieteur News- Thirty-two-year-old Jamal Halley of Lot 641 ‘D’ Field, Sophia, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to answer to four charges.
Halley pleaded not guilty to all charges, which were read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
It is alleged that on March 22, 2025, at Harpy Drive, North East La Penitence, Georgetown, Halley had in his possession one suspected Glock 45 pistol with serial number XA245, along with 10 suspected 45 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm license.
It is also alleged that on March 14, 2025, at Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, Georgetown, Halley discharged a loaded firearm within 100 yards of public place. He also maliciously damaged four car tyres valued at $60,000, property of Anfernee George, on the same day at the said address.
The prosecution objected to bail, stating that there are no special reasons for the accused to have the firearm. The court was told that the incident was captured on camera and that the defendant escaped from the police when they attempted to arrest him. The prosecution said should the defendant be released, it will be difficult to locate him.
Halley was represented by attorneys-at-law Motee Singh and Stacy Goodings. She questioned, since the prosecution stated that her client escaped police custody, why there was no wanted bulletin released for him. She added that the police do not respect her client’s rights as a citizen.
Meanwhile, Singh relayed that no evidence was recovered that implicates his client, and no order was made for the police to detain him. The attorney then requested bail.
Magistrate McGusty said constitutions have procedures that must be followed before releasing Halley on $40,000 bail for the damage of property charge, $40,000 for the possession of firearm and ammunition charge and $150,000 for the discharging loaded firearm, totalling $230,000.
The matter was adjourned until May 7, 2025.
