Kaieteur News- A 47-year-old vagrant was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for simple larceny.
Eon Paul appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Paul is accused of committing the offence on March 26, 2025, at Hogg Street, Albouystown, Georgetown. He stole two Toyota Harrier mirrors, valuing $141,360, belonging to Caroline Hicks.
He told the court that he stole the mirror because he needed money to look after his birth certificate and identification to obtain his $100,000 cash grant. He assured the court that the larceny was his first offence. Paul said he saw the two mirrors on the parked vehicle and stole them. He later noticed that they were marked and decided to throw them away in a nearby bin.
“I throw it in the bin cause once it’s marked, it’s no good,” he said.
Hicks was absent; however, her husband was present and stated that on the day in question, he parked the car on Independence Boulevard around 7:00 hrs and went to his home to prepare for work. He returned around 9:00 hrs to take the car to the wash bay when he noticed the mirror wings were open. Upon checking, he saw that both mirrors were missing. He said he reached out to a businessman in the area and requested video footage, which showed a man with Paul’s description removing the mirrors for the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the prosecution told the court that in 2010, Paul was granted bail for breaking and entering, and in 2018 was remanded for simple larceny. Upon hearing such, Magistrate McGusty sentenced Paul to two years in prison.
