Kaieteur News- The High Court has dismissed an appeal of the $52 million filed by social media commentator Mikhail Rodrigues, also known as “Guyanese Critic”.
Rodrigues had appealed the GYD$52 million default judgment made in favour of businessmen, Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mohamed, last July. According to a release from the Mohameds’ attorney, Eusi Anderson, the judgment was upheld, and an injunction remains in effect against Rodrigues and his media outfit, They Break News Inc., preventing further defamation of the Mohameds.
According to the release, the Judge described the explanation given by the Applicants, Rodrigues and They Break News Inc., as “woefully inadequate”.
Justice Niles also ordered that Rodrigues pay the sum of $75,000 costs each to Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed for the loss of this appeal. On 14th July, 2024, the Court granted default judgment to Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed against the Guyanese Critic and his Facebook commentary platform, They Break News Inc.
The businessmen received judgment in the sum of $52 million and several injunctions preventing further defamation. The Guyanese Critic and They Break News Inc. appealed against this judgment and lost.
In the lawsuits against Rodrigues, which were filed in May, the Mohameds stated that Rodrigues, at various times in February and March of this year, during his morning programme, defamed the father and son. It was explained that in the case of the father, Rodrigues played several voice notes of him on his live online programme and later made derogatory remarks against him.
The senior Mohamed, in Court documents, said he was offended by multiple statements made by Rodrigues during his talk show, but particularly took umbrage to Rodrigues insinuating that he is a criminal. Mr. Mohamed also submitted to the Court that Rodrigues made statements to the effect that his family was financing the teachers protest back in February. According to the businessman, Rodrigues in another programme in March, told his audience that the Mohameds destroyed many lives.
He said he was also offended by other statements made by Mikhail Rodrigues. Similar claims were made by the younger Mohamed.
