-Cole says it’s time to move on
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports- With both World Athletics and Atletismo Sudamericano, the governing body for track and field in South America, officially recognizing the results of the March 16 Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) elections, General Secretary James Cole told Kaieteur News that it’s time to move forward.
An email from World Athletics’ Governance Department, seen by Kaieteur News, acknowledged receipt of the AAG’s report on the election of Sheryl Hermonstine as president of the national track and field body.
Hermonstine’s executive team includes Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim (Second Vice President), Dwayne Carter (Treasurer), Niall Stanton (Assistant Treasurer), and Kenisha Headley as Assistant Secretary.
The committee members are Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmon.
Following the AAG’s elections, six of Guyana’s leading athletics clubs have outright rejected the AAG elections, branding them unconstitutional and illegitimate.
In a strongly worded statement issued on March 20, these clubs called for the annulment of all decisions made at the AGM, including the election of the new Executive Council.
The dissenting clubs, Mercury Fast-Laners Athletics Club, Running Brave Track and Field Club, Tytan United Track Club, De Challengers Athletics Club, Christianburg Wismar Secondary School Track Club, and Ruralites Athletics Club, allege that the AGM was fundamentally flawed, violated the AAG Constitution, and was marred by disorder and intimidation.
However, speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday, Cole noted that five of the six aggrieved clubs were not in good financial standing with the AAG, citing breaches of Articles 5 and 6 of the organization’s constitution. As a result, he argued, the aforementioned clubs were ineligible to participate in the elections.
Cole further stated that Charles Nestor of Mercury Fast-Laners wrote to multiple organizations, including the media, and copied World Athletics.
In response, track and field’s global governing body stated, “Regarding the communication from Mr. Nestor, we will refrain from responding as it is not addressed to World Athletics. However, on behalf of both us and Atletismo Sudamericano, we can confirm that we recognize the AGM held on 16 March 2025 and its results.”
With World Athletics encouraging the AAG to keep them informed as the situation develops, Cole highlighted the need to shift focus toward the future, starting with preparations for the CARIFTA Games.
