Kaieteur News- Three people are now homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed a two-storey commercial and residential building at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, on Tuesday.
The fire, which started around 03:07 hrs, broke out at the ABC Chinese Restaurant, located at Lot 103 New Road. The wood and concrete structure, housed both commercial and residential spaces. The top floor was occupied by 43-year-old Danelle Williams and 42-year-old Charlene Williams as a private residence, while the ground floor was used by 50-year-old Wang Jiahai who operated the restaurant and lived there as well.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement, revealing that Danelle and Charlene Williams managed to escape from the top floor. Meanwhile, Jiahai was rescued by firefighters but sustained multiple second-degree burns to his face, abdomen, and lower extremities. “He was transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains hospitalized and under observation,” the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, the structure was completely destroyed, as both the top and ground floors were engulfed in flames. However, the adjoining one-storey building, operated by 34-year-old Vigay Gaindalall as an ice-cream parlour, was not affected by the fire.
Firefighting units from WC#14, 20, WT#84, and Ambulance #19 responded quickly to the scene. “Crews led by L/Fm Cameron, L/Fm Thomas, L/Fm Damon, L/Fm Simon, and fifteen firefighters utilized four jets from various water tenders to successfully extinguish the blaze,” the Ministry of Home Affairs reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the GFS.
