Kaieteur News- The government through the Ministry of Health is currently requesting information to determine non-traditional and modern methods for the construction of a hospital at Kamarang Village in Region 7, a remote area accessible mainly by air.

According to the document issued by the ministry, the Guyana Government has received a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) via the Health Care Strengthening in Guyana Programme, and it intends to apply part of the money towards financing the ‘Design and Build’ of a Hospital at Kamarang.

The document stated that the objective of this Request for Information is, “to determine nontraditional and modern methods for the construction of a hospital in remote areas that are accessible mainly by air. Consideration should be given to the logistics in procuring and transporting the materials recommended such as pre- fabricated panels, frames, steel structures, sand, cement, aggregate, timber and other building materials necessary into Kamarang, Region No. 7 as well as the required construction methodologies.”

It should be noted that this notice is not a short-listing or prequalification exercise for the project.

Further, the ministry said that interested contractors shall provide information demonstrating that they have the required experience to perform similar works. Contractors must have completed similar works within the last eight years, show evidence of at least two previously completed projects in remote, mountainous regions, and specifically demonstrate capabilities in managing limited transportation access.

Also, contractors are asked to submit a comprehensive, detailed methodology (maximum of 20 pages) addressing expected challenges and strategies to mitigate risks associated with construction in remote areas.

“Documentation demonstrating experience and capabilities through case studies of past sımılar works,” the ministry added.

Interested eligible contractors are asked to submit information on or before March 17, 2025 via kamarang.hcns@gmail.com

Kaieteur News understands that the Kamarang Hospital is expected to provide services of a level four hospital.

The hospital project which forms parts of the government’s vision to provide world-class healthcare to the citizens, is set to offer services such as X—rays, CT scans, testing, ultrasound among others.

The US$97 million loan Guyana secured in 2022 under this programme will be used to improve the health of the Guyanese population through increased access, quality, and efficiency of health services by improving health outcomes associated with low and high complexity procedures.

This will be done by expanding the capacity of strategic hospitals, by extending coverage of diagnostic, medical consultation, and patient management services, inclusive of the country’s hinterlands, through digital health; and by increasing the efficiency of the public health system, by strengthening key logistic, management, and support processes and inputs.
