Reg.9 RDC to spend $162M for several school projects

Kaieteur News- The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Nine is preparing to spend approximately $162 million out of its $7 billion budgetary allocation on several school projects across the region.

This is according to a tender issued by the office earlier this week. The bids are expected to open at the regional office.

The projects. which amount to $162 million (engineer’s estimates) are as follow: complete rehabilitation and extension of Sawariwau Nursery School – $14 million, extension of Katoonarib Primary School – $14 million, construction of sanitary block for teachers and nursery age children at Fly Hill Primary – $3 million, rehabilitation of Arapaima Nursery School – $10 million, complete rehabilitation and extension of Yakarinta Nursery School – $14 million, complete rehabilitation and extension of Aishalton Nursery School – $14 million, extension and rehabilitation of Kumu Primary School – $14 million, construction of teachers quarters at Kogshebai Village – $14 million, construction of teachers quarters at Quarrie Village – $14million, extension and renovation of Nappi Nursery School – $14 million, construction of sanitary block for learners and teachers at Baishazion $6 million, construction of external sanitary block for learners and teachers at Baitoon Nursery – $3 million, construction of laboratories (biology, physics) at St. Ignatius Secondary – $14 million, and construction of science laboratory at Aishalton Secondary – $14 million.

This year, the RDC was allotted some $3.7 billion out of its $7 billion towards supporting educational projects and programme across the region. It was reported previously that school buildings and other education facilities were undergoing rehabilitation so as to ensure learners and staff are accommodated in a safe and comfortable environment. Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand had noted several times in the past that the government will try to ensure that the same services and resources students on the coast received also reach learners in the hinterland regions. Some of these amenities may include the establishment of science laboratories, libraries, Information Technology labs, tarmacs, play grounds just to name a few.
