Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh de Ball done mek a comeback, and all who got fancy frocks and three-piece suit stashed away in mothballs dustin’ dem off. High society finally get a place fuh show off again, and de tailors and seamstresses and dem boutiques happy like dem win de lottery. Is pure orders flying lef, right, and centre – “I want dis dress like what Lady So-and-So wear last week.”
But yuh know how Guyana people stay—while some prancin’ round wid champagne glass in hand, others sittin’ under de mango tree watchin’ de photos on Facebook and suckin’ sour grapes. Dem seh de Ball is fuh big shots alone. Dem claim dey prefer dem lil bottom-house dance where yuh could bruk out wid yuh bare feet and no one care if yuh suit crease or yuh weave lean.
But now dem seeing deh gat bruk out even at de Ball. Is enough fug give dem old timers heart ache and headache.
Dem boys seh de Ball is fuh who can afford it and who could get invite. If yuh name nah deh pon de list, sorry, buddy, go home and dance wid yuh shadow. One fella seh he hear how some people paying whole month salary just fuh buy a tuxedo. He muss be talking he salary. Dem people wah going to be Ball loaded. De cost of de outfit is fine change fuh dem.
But leh we be real—yuh can’t show up at de Ball in yuh jeans and slippers. Dis ain’t no rum shop lime; dis high-class ting. Yuh gat to look good!
And de fashion? Oh gosh, is de real dress parade. Some people spending so much pon outfit, dem coulda build a bottom-house. One lady turn up last week in a gown wid so much frills, dem seh she look like she bring she own mosquito net. But dat ain’t stop she from tekkin’ picture fuh Facebook and givin’ de side-eye to she rival who wear a similar outfit.
Dem boys seh Ball season nice fuh de economy. So leh de Ball roll. Big shot or no big shot, everybody enjoyin’ it in dem own way—even if some just sit and bad talk while drinkin’ cheap rum. Yuh can’t stop de Ball now!
Talk half. Leff half.
