May 04, 2024 Letters
Reference is made to Ms. Sharmila Ally’s May 3, 2024 letter to your widely respected newsprint whereby Ms.Ally is denouncing the PPP’s plan to hold its Congress on May 5, 2024- same as INDIAN Arrival Day Commemorations – in Guyana.
I applaud and support Ms. Ally’s timely and compelling denouement.
Her reasoned and pragmatic prose should serve as a wakeup call for ALL Indians ( Hindus & Muslims) whose ancestors – Jahajis- (ship travelers) endured excruciating travails (akin to our African ancestors out of Africa) on their journey to (now) Guyana from India. Their mostly forced journey, and sacrifice are the optimal causative reasons for our (Indians) modern day presence in Guyana and should neither be besmirched or disrespected.
Editor, I am not sure what political gambit or one-upmanship is expected from this simultaneity but, in my humble opinion, the PPP’s insensitivity and laisse-faire attitude, denuding this deeply meaningful INDIAN Arrival Day 2024, by scheduling their 2024 Congress contemporaneously, can negatively reverberate within their voting base in the upcoming 2025 Guyana General Election.
I urge the PPP to reconsider.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Subrian Esq.
