PPP/C abuse of social media
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concern about the PPP/C’s use of social media pages and fake profiles to attack citizens who do not share its view. This is anti-democratic and does not auger well for good governance. The call by Vice President has laid the foundation. Similarly, the call by Jagdeo to go after critics of the government should be rejected since it can lead to an undemocratic Guyana. Vice President Jagdeo’s call has set a troubling precedent. The use of social media to target individuals with opposing opinions contradicts the principles of a healthy democratic society, where diverse perspectives should be respected and encouraged.
The use of social media for promoting lies, misinformation and propaganda by governments and individuals is widespread. Attempts by the government to suppress criticisms and manipulate public political discourse, not only destroys public trust but also compromises the very core of a democratic society. This behaviour is not only anti-democratic but also raises serious questions about the commitment to good governance.
Citizens should enjoy the fundamental right to express opinions without fear of reprisal. However, what is exhaustingly hypocritical about the Vice President is the fact that it is public knowledge that a known party affiliate, who has been using his social media platform to launch verbal attacks against government critics, and whom the Vice President has been entertaining at special one- on- one interviews, has been awarded a state contract under questionable circumstances. This raises serious questions about the integrity of the government’s contracting processes and the ethical standards upheld by our highest – ranking officials.
The blatant misuse and abuse of power to suppress dissent coupled with preferential treatment accorded to those align with the ruling party (PPP/C), presents an extremely distressing picture of our political landscape. Worse, this is happening in our country with enormous oil wealth flowing in the hand of the government that is seeking to stifle dissenting voices. This has real implications for the essentials of a democratic society. The interplay between oil money and the abuse of power undermines the foundation of democracy and creates a suitable environment for injustice, and inequality.
Therefore, it is troubling to hear of the recent call by Jagdeo to go after critics of the government. This approach, if adopted, could contribute to an unstable Guyana, as it stifles open dialogue and discourages citizens from expressing legitimate concerns about governance. In the spirit of a robust and vibrant democracy, it is crucial that we reject any attempts to silence dissent and create an environment where citizens feel free to express their opinions without fear of reprisal. A government’s responsiveness to criticism is a fundamental aspect of good governance and helps build a stronger and more accountable society. Guyana is losing its status as a democratic state daily and it is time that the international community take note of these developments. I urge the relevant authorities to uphold democratic values and ensure that political discourse remains respectful and inclusive. It is only through open dialogue and a commitment to democratic principles that Guyana can thrive as a stable and flourishing nation.
