Neutrality vs divisive politics

Dear Editor,

When it comes to wars rooted in religious beliefs, ethnic identity and economic philosophy we must as a nation avoid getting involved, especially when the repercussions can result in internal conflicts and economic problems on our own soil. During the time of partition (the division of India by the British) Guyanese of Indian descent were able to remain united even though many Muslims and Hindus were killing each other in what is now Pakistan and India. Also, there was a period when the Africans of South Africa were carrying out hate crimes, land grabs and expulsions of Indians. Guyanese also remained peaceful during this turmoil.

However, when there was the Cold War (conflict between communism and capitalism) our country became not only divided between the Communist PPP and the Socialist PNC, but also the economic repercussions of not being fully aligned with capitalism resulted in significant economic losses and an embargo. The economic philosophies in Guyana at the time were very divisive and resulted in many hardships for our people.

Today there are many conflicts around the world, including the one between Israel and the Philistines / Palestinians, which has existed for generations as noted in several religious texts. There is also the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has started to pit the capitalists against the communists once again.

The current conflict between China and the U.S. over Taiwan is also creating a further division in the world along economic philosophical lines. This is being exasperated by the religious conflict in the Middle East and Allies on both sides of the divide are becoming more entrenched in their positions.

As a sovereign nation we must be cautious and avoid picking sides in the emerging global conflict. Our partners come from all parts of the globe and our economic philosophy has evolved as a result of our historical experiences. Our first priority must be the welfare of our citizens and the territorial integrity of our Nation. Being a truly neutral and law-abiding Nation in the world, where differences can be peacefully expressed and intellectually shared without resulting in physical conflict must be a goal that we continue to pursue. The increasing investment in education can help us towards such an aspiration.

To do the contrary will only result in what we are witnessing on the global stage. Increasing intolerance and the lack of understanding of each other’s culture, needs and perspective. It continues to be in our Nation’s best interest to maintain a path that is peaceful and consistent with a neutral position along religious, ethnic and economic lines. The only exception being one which is rooted in Justice.
