Dreams, big and bright, this land will see us shine
Like brilliant stars, when we realize
Our dreams, your hopes, as we blaze our paths
Through this scheme of things called destiny.
Dreams, great dreams, fated now only to live
In your aching, breaking hearts and painful
Memories, forever scarred by vicious
Tongues of angry flames that leaped and lashed
And licked into shape a scorching nightmare
That charred our dreams into nothingness,
Even as we hurled our tiny bodies
Against the red-hot iron grill you put
To protect us from the dangers without,
Yet imprisoned us with the subtle ones
Within; and you in anguish, cried, “Oh! Why?”
As your tears flowed like the Essequibo.
We, now with the Angels, fly so high
Yet, though for us your tears may never dry,
We implore of you from the heavens high,
Search inside your souls for grills and shackles
That may lie smouldering inside,
Permeating and entraping all
In an inevitable inferno,
Ticking, ticking, ticking, waiting only
To erupt, or be doused by your warm love!
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Alvin Smith.
