Kaieteur Sports – Brampton Gladiators pulled off a thrilling three-wicket win off the last ball against defending champions Masters in the 2023 Ontario Round-Arm Softball Cricket Association (ORSCA)/Imran Ali Real Estate 15-overs knockout competition.
Playing at Emancipation Park at Dixee-407 ground in Brampton, Ontario, on Sunday, Brampton Gladiators were set 109 for victory and ended up with two runs required with one ball remaining.
Canada-based Guyanese Naresh “Scrapper” Singh had the responsibility with the last over but Lindon Persaud tucked away the ball to short mid-wicket to scurry through for two runs to spark unbridled celebrations among his teammates and supporters.
Experienced batsman and former Guyana first-class skipper Damodar Daesrath was with him when they created history. The right-handed Daesrath batted with a great amount of determination and defiance to score an invaluable 35 not out.
Brampton Gladiators lost wickets regularly and at crucial junctures inducing a tension-filled showdown. The tidy Singh bowled two separate spells and almost turned a hero with the ball having snapped up 3-8 from his maximum three economical overs.
Riaz Kadir chipped in with 19 for Brampton Gladiators while skipper Mark Nazir took 2-21 in his three overs to support Singh.
Earlier, Brampton Gladiators won the toss and opted to bowl in glorious sunshine. Masters’ top-scorer was Abdool Samad with 29, while another ex-Guyana player, Azib Ali Hanif and Azam Haniff made 29 not out and 20 respectively. Timore Mohamed and Kadir grabbed two wickets apiece.
Kadir was named player-of-the-match for his all-round display.
In the preceding two semi-final encounters at the same venue also on Sunday, Masters got the better of Enterprise while Brampton Gladiators defeated Sunshine.
Meanwhile, at the post-match presentation, the winning team received a trophy and all the players with one small trophy each as well. Kadir took home one for his performance. Masters team also collected a trophy while each player was given a medal. Singh was also a recipient of trophy for his memorable bowling performance.
President of the ORSCA Mitch Bacchus (Guyanese-born) congratulated the victorious side (Brampton Gladiators) and thanked all 18 teams for their participation in this year’s edition.
He also expressed his gratitude to Realtor Imran Ali for his sponsorship for the second year in succession.
