Kaieteur News – Today history will be written by the people of Guyana. Today Guyanese are called to not work. It is either we rise for fairness, or forever grovel to greed.
The publisher of this newspaper, Glenn Lall, has made a resounding call for every Guyanese to make today a ‘Day of Standstill’. He has called on citizens to stay home and not work today. By bringing the country to a standstill, the people will be making a case for saving Guyana from being further looted of its wealth.
No more will the oppressive foreign companies feast upon our precious resources, while leaving us to suffer in their shadow. Today the people will announce that they will not be subdued any longer. Today we take a stand, like a quiet storm, peaceful but powerful in the finest traditions of civil resistance.
Let every taxi, bus, speedboat, and truck come to a halt today as the wheels of our country stop turning. Stores, shops, and stalls must close their doors in unison. Customers must make no purchases today other than that which is essential.
Our message is clear- our leaders must heed the cries of the people! The Stabroek Block contract and all mining agreements, must be renegotiated in the best interest of the Guyanese people. No longer shall we tolerate a system that robs us of our prosperity.
Kaieteur Radio will be on autopilot, broadcasting special programmes highlighting the unravelling of corruption around the world. Kaieteur News will not be published tomorrow since our staff will be joining the ‘Day of Standstill’.
The ‘Day of Standstill’ is linked to the celebration of Emancipation on Tuesday, 1st August. The stand we take today, is to ensure that we remain a free nation. Today, we pave the way to break free from the chains of exploitation and injustice. Let the world know that Guyanese are not pawns in the hands of foreign corporations – we are Warriors demanding what is rightfully ours!
Tomorrow, as we celebrate Emancipation Day, let us begin the true liberation of our nation. We take this opportunity to wish all Guyanese Happy Emancipation on Tuesday. But for today, we rest!
