Kaieteur News – In response to several cybercrime charges being initiated against her by the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Melissa Atwell popularly known as ‘Melly Mel’ has responded saying, “I will not be intimidated or bullied into silence.”
While Atwell is out of the jurisdiction, Kaieteur News understands that whenever she enters Guyana she will be arrested as a wanted bulletin is expected to be issued.
The charges against Atwell come following reports made by a former Government minister, a private hospital and others.
When contacted by this publication, Atwell noted that her comment will be brief as her lawyers are looking into the purported allegations.
However, she said, “We live in a country where citizens are not allowed to criticize this regime or their associates. This government preaches about democracy yet they trample on the democratic rights of their citizens daily.”
Atwell continued, “I’ve done nothing but work tirelessly to help the people in my country, especially the poor. If speaking out against victimization and injustice is a crime, then arrest me.”
Atwell is a human rights and political activist, known for her work in Guyana. She is the founder of You Are Not Alone” (YANA) Foundation.
Recently Atwell received the Caribbean Impact Award 2022, in New York.
