Kaieteur Sports – In a shocking turn of events, the highly anticipated Hamilton Green’s Cup, which was scheduled to commence on July 16th, has been hit with yet another setback. Organisers of the prestigious Hamilton Green’s Inter-Ward knockout Football tournament, former coach Lennox Arthur announced yesterday that the tournament would be further postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
The tournament which is named after esteemed former Mayor of Georgetown and Prime Minister of Guyana, was shifted to late October, following a meeting with officials Friday last. As it is, the rescheduling of the competition is due to bad lighting and poor playing conditions at one of its major venues.
Meanwhile, the decision to delay the tournament comes as a major blow to football enthusiasts who have eagerly awaited the showdown between some of the most renowned local football teams in the country. Tournament Coordinator, Lennox Arthur, in a recent interview, cited a range of factors contributing to the decision. He noted, “The conditions at the GFC ground is not conducive for football at the moment. Though, it is not a problem from our end, these unforeseen circumstances have created a complex web of complications, making it impossible for the competition to proceed as originally scheduled.”
According to him, officials are working diligently to resolve the issues. He also provided a new October timeline for the competition. Notably, the tournament has garnered interest from teams such as Stabroek Ballers, Belle West Stars, Two Friends, No.1 All Stars, Sparta Boss, Road Runners, Club 45, Festival City Ballers, Buxton, Melanie, Stewartville, Albouystown, Airy Hall, Den Amstel, Herstelling, Bent Street and many others.
As fans and teams anxiously await further updates, the football community remains hopeful that the Prestigious Hamilton Green’s Cup will ultimately take place in October. The tournament promises to showcase the skills of some of the finest footballers in the country and serve as a platform for unforgettable moments in the history of the sport.
