2023 NGSA results…
Kaieteur News – With Guyanese students once again performing exceptionally well at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), an analysis of the 2023 results has shown that this year’s candidates have raised the bar with their performance in Mathematics and Science.
A total number of 15,273 candidates wrote the assessment on May 3, and 4, this year.
On Friday morning, the top performing candidates from around the country and their parents, as well as officials from the Ministry of Education (MOE), including Minister Priya Manickchand, gathered at the Pegasus Corporate Centre, in Georgetown, for the release of the results.
Senior Manager of Examinations Administration and Security at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), Teddy Rajan, presented the NGSA 2023 Examinations Report. This report showed students who earned a 50 percent and above pass rate at the four NGSA subjects – Mathematics, Science, English and Social-Studies.
He revealed that while there were significant improvements in Mathematics and Science pass rate this year, there was a drop in performance for Social-Studies and English subjects.
“Shifting to mathematics, the performance in mathematics aligned the better of 2020 to 2023, (also) showing significant improvement over 2022,” Rajan disclosed.
For Mathematics, the pass rate has improved from 34.72 percent in 2022 to 39.87 percent this year. For Science, a total percentage of 55.11 percent students passed, which is an improvement from 46.45 percent in 2022.
Additionally, for English 64.47 percent candidates attained a pass grade, which is a slight decrease from 64.75 percent in 2022.
“Starting with English is the trend. The percentage of candidates attaining 50 percent or more remains above 60 percent over the past four years. In 2023, there were 64.47 percent attainments,” Rajan said.
Similarly, for Social-Studies 58.57 percent candidates passed representing a decrease from 58.9 percent.
“Year on year, candidates earning 50 percent or more remain consistently over 50 percent of the cohort, we are seeing a decline of 0.3 percent in 2023 over 2022,” Rajan added.
Notably, he stated too that, as with all the subjects, the female candidates continue to outperform the male candidates year-on-year.
The NGSA results are available online, parents and students are advised to log onto the following website: http://exams.moeguyana.org. The candidates’ timetable will provide the necessary information to access these results.
