Young Entrepreneur
By: Allyiah Allicock
Kaieteur News – “I think young entrepreneurs bring a fresh perspective and new innovations to the business world and society by extension.”
While the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic period brought its fair share of challenges to our lives and society, it on the other hand also brought about new opportunities for many in different ways.
An example of one such opportunity, is how Reshonah Gordon became an entrepreneur at the age of 16.
How she became an emerging entrepreneur, you may ask? Well, the young woman turned her gifted creativity skills into a whole business venture just after the pandemic struck our local shores.
Back in August 2020, Gordon became the proud owner of an arts and crafts business called ‘Everything Crafty’.
How did the idea come about for the business? In a recent interview with this magazine, Gordon shared that growing up, she has always been a ‘craft person’.
With a deep interest in craft at a young age, she would be making beaded bracelets, cards and picture frames just to name a few for her family as Christmas gifts.
Never letting those skills fade, Gordon said that when the pandemic struck and the country was in sort of a lock down, she was home bored like most people with not much to do.
Then one day, she decided to get back into her creative ways and use the time to make some décor for her room. Without a clue what this would turnout to be, that moment was certainly a game changer for her.
Her friends had seen the décor and recognized that she has talent and skills that can go a far way.
According to her, they were the ones who encouraged her with the idea of starting this venture.
With ‘Everything Crafty’ being in existence for over two years now, Gordon related that “My business allows me to express my determination and creativity.”
She also shared that being in the small business world can sometimes be brutal but the support she has been receiving from family, friends and even strangers has been amazing.
“What started with wall décor developed into a wide range of customized products,” she related. Now her business offer items such as Polaroid frames and customized game boards just to name a few.
When asked about her journey thus far, if there have been any challenges, Gordon related that having to make time for her business, studies and being at a full-time job can be a big challenge at times.
But she has managed to overcome this “with the help of her family and friends as they pitch in to help prepare orders and even deliver when I can’t.”
As it relates to the pandemic, she added that with the business started during that period, it influenced her operations in a positive rather than a negative way.
With a lot yet to explore with her business, Gordon revealed that moving forward, she one day hopes to have her very own gift shop and a brand that when persons think gifting, they think “everything crafty”.
When asked what responsibilities young entrepreneurs have on society, she mentioned that they bring new ideas and innovations to our local business industry.
“I think young entrepreneurs bring a fresh perspective and new innovations to the business world and society by extension,” she commented.
She is of the view that a lot can be done locally to help boost small businesses such as supporting these ventures which can help them grow.
“As a society, we can also give them a little grace as they are now growing and will fall short. We often times are quick to write them off but we stick with these big establishments that fail us multiple times,” she added.
For persons interested in reaching out to Gordon, they can contact her on WhatsApp on telephone number (592) 648 -7032 or on Instagram and Facebook at everything.crafty_
Very soon, persons may visit them at Safe Space which is located at the Courtyard Mall on Robb Street between Camp & Wellington.
