Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – I did fully agree with the Opposition Leader’s initial, and short-lived, position that he would await the next general election cycle before revealing his plans for the petroleum sector. I believe that it was politically correct to do so at this time since no election timetable has been set, the requisite broad-based consultations have not been held and policy manifesto developed, and Mr. Norton is not a Presidential candidate or President-in-waiting.
While it is good, impressive even, that the Opposition Leader is forward looking, it should not be at the expense of more immediate issues which are his direct responsibility and which have the potential for catastrophic development if unaddressed. Also, while it is doubtless reassuring that he, as President, will engage ExxonMobil for more benefits for Guyanese within his first 50 days in office, what is of greater concern to many of his supporters, including myself, is his willingness and determination as Opposition Leader, to systematically engage the PPP/C administration on economic issues, mostly petroleum-related, regarding spending priorities, the rate of accumulation of debt, the apparent disregard of many transparency, constitutional and economic development practices and the use of public resources as a private slush fund for partisan, propaganda and politicking purposes that could squander much of the current and future benefits of the petroleum sector.
Mr. Norton’s achievements here would be a more significant and welcome indicator of his ability to positively engage our international partners in the development of this tremendously valuable resource.
Sincerely
Oscar Dolphin
