=Interesting Creatures=
By Shervin Belgrave
Kaieteur News – In the deepest part of the world’s oceans far beyond the reach of fishing nets and even some sea predators live the Dumbo Octopus, an animal with big ear-like fins that slightly resembles the elephant from the Disney movie called Dumbo.
This interesting creature measures around eight inches and weighs about 13 pounds and feeds on snails, worms, and other creatures they hoover up from the ocean floor.
Dumbo Octopuses live at depths of up to 13,100 feet in the ocean and use its ear-like fins to propel them through the water and steer using webbed arms as they move across the ocean floor.
Not many sea creatures can live so deep in the ocean because there is a complete absence of sunlight and it is extremely cold at the bottom.
Dumbo Octopuses, however, have the ability to survive such extreme conditions putting it at a slight advantage of not being caught in fishing nets and absent from the menu of most sea predators.
It is also the only Octopus that can live at such depths in the ocean.
Apart from its ability to live in the very deep, female Dumbo Octopuses can store sperm for long periods of time after mating with a male.
According to scientists females have developed this unique behavior because it is very hard to find a mate in the vastness of the ocean and when they do sometimes the condition of the environment is not suitable to fertilize their eggs.
So instead of wasting the opportunity to reproduce, the female Dumbo Octopuses store the male’s sperm after mating and then transfer them to her eggs when she senses that the environmental conditions are suitable for reproduction.
Although these creatures spend much of their lives suspended just above the ocean floor they lay their eggs on it and they are attached to rocks or other
hard surfaces found there.
