Dear Editor,
Second Vice President Jagdeo’s recent remarks that attempt to paint the Opposition as having no comments on the new model PSA are a perfect example of the difference between the current PPP and Coalition leadership. Whereas the PPP intends to rush every meaningful piece of legislation or important agreement through, we believe that Guyanese have a right to be consulted with and given due time to assess important documents. We believe that a rushed document is just the same as a bad one, and given the huge sums in question (perhaps as much as a $100 billion USD in revenue will be governed by the new PSA), ample time is needed to assess. It seems to us that this is obvious. When we have completed this assessment, we will make our comments to the press.
Further, we have called not only for this PSA to be laid in the National Assembly, but for a law which governs the length of time provided for consultations, so that this is not at the discretion of any government, much less the PPP with its “two weeks” mantra. We reiterate: Guyana is not Georgetown, and all Guyanese deserve the opportunity to speak. This, again, we hold to be obvious. Only political parties that serve their own corrupt interests would play games when $100 billion USD is on the line. Unfortunately, that perfectly describes the PPP.
Yours truly,
Elson Low,
Economic and Youth Policy Advisor to the Leader of the Opposition
