Dear Editor,
The Democratic National Congress, more commonly known as Guyana’s One-Man Party, has now made positions of leadership in its government open to all Guyanese. As the Party’s Leader, I have come around to the reality that I may not be able to achieve all that is necessary both financially and politically to secure the necessary votes either within the DNC’s internal elections or at our national elections as President.
As such, I cannot hold Guyana and Guyanese ransom, and so have opted to open leadership positions both within the Party’s Central Executive Committee (Chairperson, etc.) and at national elections (Presidential and Prime Ministerial candidates along with all other portfolios) open to all Guyanese. The Democratic National Congress is founded on democratic principles, where positions of authority are won by the electoral system. The party is being offered as the vehicle through which all Guyanese can join and have their say, have their voices heard, their interests represented in Government. However, even as the DNC will represent all Guyanese, I have opted to have the party known and commonly referred to as the Poor People’s Party (PPP), fitting enough to carry on the work of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who I am sure would be proud of Guyana’s efforts at fighting corruption and lawlessness in Government, a cause to which he had dedicated his entire life.
The push for Guyana’s national development, to simply lift the poor out of poverty has turned into a proverbial fight, a war between our governments and the people they are supposed to represent. When governments disregard and break laws designed to protect its citizens, oppress segments of its population, encourage companies both local and foreign to trample upon our labor, our environment, regardless of what they say, these governments do not represent the interests and wishes of Guyanese. When they allow our welfare to be throttled because of the intransigence of their public officials, we know these governments are intent on serving themselves only. We know that we have become second class citizens who they consider are appointed to suffer under their incompetence and disregard for our welfare. These governments are at war with their people, intent only on remaining in power and getting rich off the backs of their citizens.
The task at hand is to develop a core leadership within the DNC which will be fully competent and functional from day one should we win at the national elections. This will require the input of Guyanese who recognize that Guyana cannot move forward without a third party in charge of our government, and who can commit themselves to working to build the Democratic national Congress into the viable party that it needs to win more than fifty percent of the votes in the national elections. This sounds like a big task, but I am confident that with close to fifty percent of the country living around the poverty line this is achievable. I have always been of the opinion that Guyanese are smarter than their governments. This is a great opportunity to use our democracy to prove that this is so, that we can indeed govern better than our governments. We have two years to secure our future.
Yours faithfully,
Craig Sylvester,
Party Leader,
Democratic National Congress
