Young Entrepreneur...
“Different youth have different ideas, and skills which lead to a greater variety of services that the community will gain access to.”
By Allyiah Allicock
Kaieteur News – At a very young age, Patrena Alicia Blair always had a deep passion for technology and the field of graphic designing. Then one day, she had to put her skills to the test when a friend had asked her to design a logo.
Today, The Waterfalls magazine will share with you how that very moment changed Blair’s life into something even greater. The 21-year-old Lindener is now the proud owner of a graphic designing and customizing business called ‘CreativityDash Exclusive’.
In an exclusive interview with this magazine, Blair said when her friend had asked to design the logo, she said, “girl I don’t know how I will do it but I’ll try.” Blair stated that after taking up the challenge, she used a website called ‘Postermywall’ which helped her to create the piece. “It came out okay at that time and she liked it and so did many others who also saw it, they even asked her who designed it; then she was like how much, and I said I have no idea,” she recalled.
From that moment, things changed she shared, because she and her friend started researching information on pricing and different aspects of starting a business. “This all happened during the pandemic in my final year of reading for my Diploma in Computer Science,” Blair added.
Her business was later launched in August 2020. She explained that when she first started her business, she was just offering services such as designing flyers, logos, business cards, etc. and then a year later, she bought two printers and a heat press with some assistance from her parents and with the money she earned while making flyers.
She mentioned, “It was not easy sourcing this equipment, a lot of research was done to know exactly what I needed to use in creating good quality products.”
Blair’s business which is now in operation for more than two years, offers services such as business flyers, logos, labels, business card designs, custom designs on apparel, cups, tumblers, picture panels, and case printing and much more.
Blair, who is currently a part-time staff at NCN’s Linden branch as a temporary producer, said that the support she has been receiving so far has been great, especially from her parents and siblings.
But to get where she is today was not all sunshine and rainbows, because just like any other small business, hers encountered a few challenges in the past.
Some she listed were sourcing materials to fulfill her orders, and having to juggle her business and her work. How did she manage to overcome this? The young woman related that she researched different places outside of Guyana where she can place orders for the materials she needed, which helped in a big way. Also “I would usually make flyers at night once I have no classes since I’m enrolled with Jain University from the Goal Scholarship, so as to balance between her work and business.”
As it relates to the pandemic, she noted that it was one of the main reasons why she started her own business. “It positively impacted the growth of my business,” she added.
With more in mind to further develop her business, Blair stated that the long-term goal really is to establish a more permanent location where she can create and display many more of what ‘CreativityDash Exclusive’ has to offer.
When asked what responsibility young entrepreneurs such as herself have in society, she is of the view that they help to create more job opportunities for others, and bring a whole host of new services to the table. “Different youth have different ideas, and skills which lead to a greater variety of services that the community will gain access to,” she noted.
Blair mentioned also that in order to help the emerging businesses in our society thrive, is for community members to simply support their own, and also for marketing offices to be established so as to offer small businesses better packages for advertising.
“This surely can help any small business in a big way.”
While there is a lot in store yet for Blair’s business, persons can reach out to her via Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok @Creativity Dash, via email at creativitydash@gmail.com, call telephone number (592) 632,6542 or WhatsApp her on telephone number (592) 650-7217.
