Dear Editor,
I have noticed for quite some time, that some ill-informed letter writers and columnists in the media keep harping a total lie about the previous government being responsible for the present dismal state of the sugar industry.
I will now give you undisputed facts of the story. From back in the 70s to the early 90s, which I know about, the sugar union GAWU which was once led by a now deceased president of Guyana, called numerous strikes in the industry, which lasted for, not days, but weeks. On top of that, there was never a strike without arson of the canes in the fields. Then the corporation had to give in to whatever was demanded by the union. Many strikes were called for frivolous reasons. Plus, when those workers went on strike, they could afford to stay home, while their unemployed relatives went and worked as scabs.
When the fires were set in the fields, the security personnel would try to go to the locations to arrest arsonists, to no avail, because the trick used by these scoundrels, was that they joined two long candles and light them with dry trash at the bottom and when the fire starts, they are long gone. Then there were lots of stealing of valuable vehicles parts by factory and workshops workers; plus sabotage in both places. A current top official was a chief instigator of strikes. The truth has been hidden by the union and its sympathizers for too long. They cannot be so shameful to deny these facts. Sugar’s present hole was dug a long time ago.
Whatever is being done now to resuscitate sugar is totally owed by this government to the sugar industry. GAWU should prop up the industry with their own funds. I personally don’t like politics, because the meaning is disgusting. Poli means many or plenty, and tics are blood sucking insects. What does that say about the current crop of politicians. Dark hole indeed.
Regards,
