Dear Editor,
Afraid of the renegotiation of a 2% royalty contract with Exxon? Because it will discourage other investors?
By not renegotiating the contract, are you not now encouraging other investors to come and take advantage of us? Is that not the exact opposite of what you should be doing? Hurt the Guyanese reputation? The reputation for what? For not standing up for your own people? That is clear enough. People who stand up for themselves are always respected by their opponents. People who do not, are quickly taken advantage of without mercy. Even if you do not have the guts required to renegotiate the terrible deal with Exxon, at least you are not prevented from doing what most other energy producing countries are doing now, and that is taxing the windfall profits of oil companies that they have reaped in the last two years. England just raised the oil companies’ royalty tax from 25% to 35%.
Tell us what is really going on Minister Bharrat. By sitting on your hands and offering lame excuses for inaction, you validate the odors of corruption wafting out of the Guyanese government. That also encourages the exact opposite type of investor to come to us. The type who are quick to take advantage of poor Guyanese people, whose wealth you are now giving away. The world sees the truth. Eventually the Guyanese people will also see the truth. I am still waiting for that day with hope.
Yours faithfully,
Arie Oosterman
