Kaieteur News – A shoot-out between four men on Saturday at Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown has resulted in the death of a Passerby who was on his way home.
Shot dead around 16:50hrs in the cross fire is, 53-year-old Dexter McFarlene, a Labourer, of lot 2 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt.
According to information received by Kaieteur News, McFarlene had just stepped out from a bus and was killed only a few meters away from his home.
McFarlene reportedly fell into a drain where he remained motionless while the shooters escaped.
Kaieteur News understands that the bullet was not intended for McFarlene, but for a lone gunman who was being chased through Laing Avenue by three men.
Police reported that three men were seen running behind another. The man being chased reportedly turned off from Front Road, West Ruimveldt, and onto Laing Avenue, where McFarlene was walking at the time.
As the gunmen pursued the man they were chasing, one of them opened fire behind him and a bullet struck McFarlene instead, killing him. Crime Scene Detectives who visited the scene shortly after said that McFarlane’s body bore a single gunshot wound to the left side chest.
Further investigations revealed that the gunmen were chasing their target all the way from Independence Boulevard. Two of the suspects were caught on camera trailing their target on a motorcycle. However, after the chase intensified they dismounted the bike and decided to run behind the man exchanging gunfire in the process.
Police removed spent shells from the scene and later recovered the motorcycle that the suspects were seen riding, from a yard in an area.
Investigations are ongoing.
