Kaieteur News – The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has shortlisted the country’s male and female players for the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) against Suriname and French Guiana.
The November 25-27 IGG will make a return for the first time since it was last hosted in 2017 in Paramaribo, and this time around, the three countries will compete in the disciplines of Cycling, Athletics (Track and Field), Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Football, Swimming, Squash, Basketball and Badminton.

Kimol Grimmond, who was member of Guyana’s bronze-winning 3×3 team at the inaugural Caribbean Games, will be part of the country’s IGG basketball team.
Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid was named as the head coach for the women’s side, with assistance coming from Junior Niles and Ann Gordon, while Willon Cameron will lead the women’s side along with Courtney Taylor as his assistant.

President of the GABF, Michael Singh, said the team will be encamped nearing the games, but in the interim, they’re working closely with the respective coaches at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Basketball is one of the IGG’s marquee events, particularly between Suriname and Guyana.
Catering to student-athletes at the U-20 level, the Inter-Guiana Games first took place in 1967.
Former National Football player, ‘QT’ Donald was sent to Suriname by former President Forbes Burnham to work with the Surinamese on Guyana’s behalf, to outline the games that were formed as a means of fostering bilateral relations, through sports between the two countries.
Football (basketball started in 1972) was the first sport that was played between Guyana and Suriname at the Inter-Guiana Games. The two countries battled for the Forbes Burnham/Johan Pengel Trophy.
Johan Adolf Pengel, in 1967, served as Prime Minister of Suriname.
