Western Tigers trounce Santos; 10-man GFC needle defenseless GDF

Kaieteur News – Well it’s all now down to the final of the Georgetown Football Association Senior League which would be contested this Sunday at the GFC Ground following last Sunday’s semi-finals which saw Western Tigers and Georgetown Football Club romping to well-deserved and hard-fought victories which sealed their date in the championship match.

Watched by a fair-sized crowd under dark skies which at times felt like it was going to rain, but it didn’t, Western Tigers, contesting the feature match against old nemesis Santos, needed extra time to stamp their authority in a bruising exchange.

Like it had happened in three of the four quarterfinals, no clear winner came to the fore at the end of regulation and stoppage time, so an extra 30 minutes was required to separate the two sides. This simply meant that the fittest of the two combatants would emerge unscathed and for sure, the other would be seriously wounded.

As it turned out, the Tigers ensured that they stood tall at the end of the battle. Neither side were clinical in the respective final third and at times, the match lacked energy with each side just contented to move the ball around the park and wait for something to happen, rather than make it happen.

Eventually though, Western Tigers mustered the fortitude so to do and eventually broke the deadlock when Michael Oie rocketed one past Goalkeeper Alex Murray between the uprights for Santos. It was the 105th minute that the deadlock was finally broken.

This brought the Tigers’ fans from West Ruimveldt to their feet whilst it dented the confidence of the Santos supporters.

But, it was the beginning of the flood gates being opened to some extent for the Western lads. Eight minutes later, the Tigers Captain, Daniel Wilson who controlled the midfield (engine room) put the game beyond the reach of Santos when he scored in the 113th minute.

The sealer was scored by Kerron Powell in the 120-1-minute spelling the end of a robust and brave show by Santos and they will now play the Guyana Defence Force in the third-place game since the Army lost to home team GFC, by the lone goal of their clash.

Unlike the main game, GFC, known as the giant killers, scored in just the 12th minute from a well-directed, flat shot from just at the top of the box off the boot of Lennox Young. It turned out to be the ‘Golden’ goal of the match even as the Soldiers threw all the artillery they possessed at the young GFC side.

The home team represented well, and despite being placed on the back foot by one of their own, Lennox Cort, who was booked for the second time in the match (22nd & 73rd) resulting in his removal from the pitch, they stood rock solid to deny the Army and secure their place and date with Western Tigers on their home turf.
