Dear Editor,
Growing up as a child, I was fortunate to know my two grandmothers and a grandfather, unfortunate not to know and meet the other one. My grandparents seemed to be the best people in the world, more than my parents, they gave you anything you asked for and didn’t discipline me like my parents did, not knowing better I loved them more than my parents and found myself more with them than with my parents. The admiration for my grandparents got to a new level, when during research for my studies, I came across documentation on them and their generation that stunned me into awe, how hard and how long they worked daily for little, with no technology, little food and limited medical care and couldn’t get access to education, yet they never complained of their hardships, never asked for anyone for anything, never complained about their simple lives and they were only known to give love, comfort and kindness, all they wanted is that their sacrifice will give the next generations an easier and prosperous life, they put this task in the hands of Guyana’s political leaders who have failed them by selling out the patrimony of the country the previous generations left for us.
It was appalling to read in KN seniors calling out for assistance to live. No senior in this country should be asking anyone for assistance, not even from their own families. They slaved and built what is known as Guyana, they left a country with vast riches for the next generations, only to see the wealth being squandered by the incompetent, shameless, sinful, and despicable Politicians they sent to parliament. The PPP throw pittance at the seniors just to look better than the PNC, since the PNC gave them nothing, which is the reason PNC should not be ruling this country as they have failed the litmus test on looking out for the interests of the seniors.
Growing up with the elders in my community which was poor, we went to school, played and live the lives of happy children under the teaching and protection of the elders, regardless of their race, religion or politics, as they acted as guardians for every child, even if not their family. There was no kidnapping or sexual assault of none of the children in my community growing up, as there seems to be happening today. The senseless crime in Guyana didn’t happen with my elders, like one man killing another over the last shot in a rum bottle, man burnt his wife over a bird cage, the police at an accident, instead of collecting evidence, collected beef and so many outrageous acts of violence a human being can inflict upon another happening in Guyana today.
Many of you who have things good today should thank the elders, as their sacrifice made that possible. Those that are struggling, remember the elders left a country with vast riches and you should not be struggling for the basics of life, noting your wealth was given away by evil and unconscionable parliamentarians. As per the title of this letter of righteous elders, there are also bad and evil ones, like those aligned to undemocratic, oppressive and corrupt governments, and those who are now targeting children as sexual predators, the law should come down on the latter so hard, so as fast as they learn to target children, they must unlearn that just as fast.
So today when you see elders, old and frail, some with their canes and walkers, in their wheelchairs and those bedridden, remember they were once young, toiling so you can be what you are, you can have what you have. They built a country with riches and left it for you, so today when you see an elderly person, acknowledge them with respect and assist them if you can as they are the reason you are here in this world with a country. I personally say thanks to the elders with a salute of respect.
Sincerely yours,
R. David.
