Kaieteur News – After being diagnosed with kidney failure in early 2019, Gaitree Anesah Bechan was faced with some financial challenges. Though having the support of her family and husband through the difficult times, the young mother of two did not want her family alone to bear that burden of supporting her financially.
As such, in 2020, she decided to launch her own small business in a bid to earn an income to help with the expenses and support her family.
Her business, ‘Sweetsnax by Anesah’ was launched in June 2020, a few months after the pandemic hit the country. The home-based business operates from Mahaica, where her parents reside, and also at Herstelling on the East Bank of Demerara where she resides.
Bechan shared with this publication recently, “my toughest phase of life inspired me to start my business, when I was diagnosed with right kidney failure and only had the support of my husband, my parents and my sister.”
Sharing how she got around to opening up her business, Bechan said that after being diagnosed, in September 2019, she did a laser method operation and following that she had another operation done in March 2020. Following her operations which cost a lot of money, she said, “I forced myself to get better than to be pity by everyone.”
In getting better, the young woman in May that year decided to take private cake classes since baking is something she always had a passion for. Having been practicing for some time she decided to officially launch her bakery business in June.
According to Bechan, since being in business, she has been receiving tremendous support and feedbacks from family and clients. Over the period, she added that she has been introducing newer treats to the list. Her business also caters for any event. ‘Sweetsnax by Anesah’, she said offers sweet treats and cakes such as cupcakes, cheesecake, donuts, cookies, donut balls with dipping sauce, gulab jamun, mithai and many more.
There have been challenges along the way. Apart from those she faced over the past two years, besides her medical condition and having to take care of her kids when her husband is away at work, has been the cost of ingredients to fulfill her orders. This she said has been a minor problem at times. In spite of the challenges, she still manages to meet the needs of her customers.
When asked what her long-term goal for the business is, she said that it is to one day have her very own dessert shop and to build a future for herself and family. “This is very important to me given the toughs things I have gone through in life,” she shared.
Bechan is of the view that young entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in society. According to her, “For me, us young small business entrepreneurs, as it relates to society, add hope and positivity to the younger generation and to others.”
She added also that to boost small businesses more locally, is for entrepreneurs to utilise the various social media platforms as this would reach a wider customer-base to increase sales.
