Dear Editor,
Please permit me space to briefly respond to two letters that were published in the Kaieteur News.
Firstly, Mark Benschop wrote that Freddie Kissoon’s letter was misleading. However, he did not specifically state what was misleading about Freddie’s letter. Rather, Benschop inferred that Freddie ought to know what President Ali is thinking. Feebly, Benschop wrote that Freddie only has a few hundred readers. May I point out that Kaieteur News has approximately 80,000 hits every day. The figure is displayed right at the top of the newspaper. Many, if not most of those readers tune in specifically to read Freddie Kissoon’s column who is the most widely read columnist in the Caribbean.
Finally, a cursory review of the daily records would reveal – ‘The Freddie – Gildarie Show’ is drawing about 3 times more viewership than Mark Benshop’s ‘Straight up’ show.
In his quest to embarrass Freddie and impugn the President, Benschop fell on his own sword!
Secondly, a recently published GHK Lall column is replete with the usual incendiary hyperbole. Mr. Lall wrote that the Government considers public servants as the enemy. Without evidence, he concluded by suggesting that African Guyanese are deliberately being ‘run into the ground.” When the last coalition Government summarily fired 7000 predominantly Indians and collaterally putting 30,000 people on the bread line, Mr. Lall pen was silent.
Mr. Lall’s rhetoric has lately transcended the usual caustic bile to become dangerous and inflammatory. In many counties, such deliberate provocation will carry serious consequences.
Mr. Lall should take great comfort that the PPP/C Government is not nearly as bad as he says it is!
Regards,
Chitrakha Persaud
