Dear Editor,
In reference to article by Vishnu Bisram captioned: “Inappropriate threats against GECOM Chair” (Aug. 29), why is the opposition leader and PNC upset with Chair Claudette Singh (ret’d justice)? Have the PNC and its leader forgotten that Ms. Claudette Singh was the choice of then President Granger who proposed her name and Opposition Leader Jagdeo accepted and nominate her as the chair.
And Granger accepted! Why? Was she expected to do any party’s bidding? Was the PNC leadership misled? Are Norton and the PNC angry because of the election debacle involving Chair Claudette with the final outcome going against them on August 2?
Several other questions come to mind relating to Ms. Singh’s behaviour and actions. What was that disappearing act all about a couple days after the election? Weren’t guards and security officials alerted and prepared and appeared for a swearing in of Granger as President just days after the election? Wasn’t the Chancellor of Judiciary placed on standby and the President on the ready for the swearing in? Didn’t Granger dress up for a swearing in and was put on hold at Princess (one day) waiting for the right time (or the phone call) for the swearing in? Didn’t the court block the swearing in from an opposition petition after Lowenfield had prepared election results from Mingo’s bogus count? Didn’t Granger repeatedly say that he would not swear in as President unless the Chair make the declaration that he was elected as President? Why the sudden anger with her when she did the right thing on Aug 2? Is PNC upset because the Chair change course on a declaration mid-stream? Was this due to diplomats (read US Ambassador) and media commentaries on her behaviour throughout the saga? Instead of attacking the Chair, why not focus on how to professionalise GECOM and win over supporters who were alienated from the party with failed implementation of promises!
Yours truly,
Calvin Braithwaite
