‘Sweet week’ as GuySuCo surpasses sugar production at two estates

Kaieteur News – The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has announced that both its Albion/Port Mourant and Blairmont estates have surpassed their sugar production targets for the week even as the company’s sugar production for this second crop is not expected to perform so well.

A public statement from the company said that the two estates, “…surpassed their sugar production targets in the same week, ending August 20, 2022.” The information stated that the Albion/Port Mourant estate had set the record by surpassing its target by 13.5 percent, while the Blairmont Estate surpassed its target by 4.2 percent. As a result of this fourth weekly target being accomplished for the year by the Albion/Port Mourant Estate, the company said employees who worked 80 percent or more days for that week qualified and will benefit from an additional tax free day’s pay.

Balraj Dhanraj, Estate Manager at Albion Estate (ag) said that the, “… achievement was possible because of the improved cane quality and consistent grinding operations of the factory.” He explained that there was only 1.1 hours of downtime for the week and that the factory was more reliable. He encouraged the workers to keep extending their efforts because of the opportunity to achieve more, given the favourable weather that currently exists.

Hutton Griffith, Manager of Blairmont Estate also encouraged his team to ‘keep up the good work and [to] continue to strive for excellence even in the face of the challenges that the industry faces.” Griffith implored the workers to maintain the same commitment for the remainder of the crop, so that they can benefit consistently from weekly performance incentives. In congratulating the management and estate staff, GuySuCo’s Executive branch urged all of the grinding estates to strive towards the achievement of the weekly production incentive. The company said that the executive also urged workers to remain focused and committed in achieving their weekly production targets.

GuySuCo has blamed intense rainfall for many of the production lapses experienced, especially during the earlier part of the year. It said that intense rainfall during the first half of the year adversely affected the mechanical harvesting operation, but the estates were able to leverage on the improved cane quality, and productivity, in surpassing their target.

Apart from the rain, GuySuCo has also pointed to inefficient tilling capacity due to inadequate machinery as another major hindrance towards improved sugar production levels. The company has thus embarked on a turn around that will involve additional mechanisation, improved sugar cane production and quality as well as grinding efficiency.

GuySuCo’s Chief Executive Officer Sasenarine Singh told Kaieteur News, that the company is not expected to meet its required production for the second crop that will satisfy both its local and foreign markets, but assured that Guyana will not be left without the sweetener. He said that GuySuCo has first priority to Guyana and as the year whines down, he does not intend to have any sugar shortages, especially during the holiday season.
