Dear Editor,
Developing countries, including Guyana, are expected to experience the Perfect Storm, caused by the crisis in food security. Guyana, with some 40 percent of its citizens living in conditions below the poverty line, seems also likely to simultaneously experience an enhanced Perfect Storm owing to the real estate crisis – homes are difficult to come by if you are in this poverty crunch. The 40 percent below the poverty line will fool themselves about having their own properties but they will be unable to sustain mortgage payments and house maintenance in addition to normal living costs.
When I was a boy and we were under the management of the colonial administration, they provided cheap housing accommodation both in the city and in rural areas including then Linden. The colonials undertook the cost for management of these low cost rentals. Our Guyanese leaders in Government should mimic the colonials, while the leaders on the other side of the parliamentary floor should advance the cause which will bring a better living situation to the poor. Time is of the essence.
