Strategic ways the government can help Guyanese

Kaieteur News – Since I am neither an Economist nor financial expert, I avoided commenting on this recent Statement from the PPP hierarchy that the Oil money should not be spent whimsically or as they put it like a drunken sailor.
I’ve discussed this matter with knowledgeable persons and I challenge the government to say whether what follows will not help Guyanese today and tomorrow.
First, ensure that our educational system is improved by providing additional training for teachers and ensuring that each school has a viable cultural and sporting programme so that we produce young men and women of quality.
I need not go into detail but schools in my community have no such facilities and opportunities. Such an investment can only help.
Say what you like about the British and Queens; we played Chess, we had two grounds for football, cricket and hockey. We had a scout group and a cadre corp. We had drama and plays. We had camps in the countryside funded by the Government. We had regular athletic programmes and competitions. These are some of the things, which a caring government with resources must do.
Second, improve health systems and put an end to this pretense of using the oil money to bring in medical personnel without first ensuring that we have modern equipment in all of our medical institutions.
Third, to double the wages, salaries and pension of all public servants and government employees. With the rising cost of just about everything and the recent protest in Suriname and Sri Lanka, this is the easiest of the three proposals which can begin at the end of the current month.
