Man gets 17 years for stabbing villager over “talk name” issue

Kaieteur News – Samuel Stewart called ‘Sammy’ was on Tuesday sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of his Limlair Village, East Berbice Corentyne villager, 25-year-old Patrick Raynol called ‘Boy.’

Stewart was on trial at the Berbice High Court before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall for the capital offence.
On May 17, following the jury’s two-hour deliberation, Stewart was found not guilty of murder but guilty of the lesser count, killing Raynol on June 16, 2019, at Limlair Village.
On Tuesday, Justice Morris-Ramlall told Stewart that he showed no remorse for his actions, and added that he was a mature adult who is able to make decisions for himself while being aware of the repercussions.
As such, she sentenced Stewart to 17 years imprisonment and ordered prison authorities to deduct the time he spent on remand.
According to reports, there was an argument between Raynol and the suspect at a liquor shop in the village when the accused whipped out a knife and stabbed Raynol to the right side stomach.
The incident reportedly stemmed from the suspect accusing a cousin of Raynol of “talking his name”. Raynol intervened in the matter and was attacked.
Mother of the dead man, Camilla Surujmohan, 53, had stated that she received a call from another son informing her that Raynol was involved in a fight that resulted in him being stabbed.
“Around 11 last night [the night of the incident] I get the call saying he get bore up (stab) but I had to ask if is joke he mekkin’ because I was shocked. He seh get a car and come fuh he now. And he seh he serious suh by time we rush out deh with de car he almost done dead,” she had related to this publication.
According to the woman, her son was crouched on the ground a short distance from the liquor shop where he was stabbed. Raynol had reportedly run after the suspect but he collapsed.
Surujmohan had related to this newspaper that when she inquired about what took place she was told that “a bai bore (stab) he. Who is the bai? I don’t know. All wah dem seh is dat another cousin had an argument and de boy go to bore de cousin and de cousin run away suh me son [Raynol] turn up and seh dat how you can’t fight my cousin and de boy brace he up and start cuff he and bore he.”
Surujmohan had stated too that for the entire Sunday he was at home “drinking a red wine” but left to go out that night. “I never saw my son back until I see he lie down deh with blood all over.”
