Dear Editor,
Many fair minded and patriotic Guyanese are confused by the different standards, allocated for crimes committed.
An attorney allegedly spat and insulted a black police woman. Members of supposedly ‘civic groups’, the opposition and fringe social classes went into overdrive in their condemnation. Their indignation was limitless and continues unabated.
On Monday, the police released the name of an African Guyanese who allegedly killed Indo-Guyanese Levoy Taljit. This seems to be a continuation of the sad refrain where Indians are repeatedly either robbed, assaulted or killed by African Guyanese. However, there is a glaring disparity…there is no condemnation or outrage from the so-called warriors for racial justice and equity. Spitting on a black police woman makes them mightily angry. But horrific murder of Indians…they don’t care, and cannot be bothered!
Levoy Taljit was a fine young man whom I am familiar with personally. He was hardworking, honest and honourable. At the very least, the tragic circumstances under which his life was taken should be meritorious of comparative calls of social and racial justice!
Regards,
Chitrakha Persaud
