Dear Editor,
Would National Awards for those who battled to ensure that every valid ballot was rightly counted after March 2020 elections be the right compensation for them?
Would dishing out awards go any way to solving the actual problems that caused the anguish and suffering for five months? Would it not be more sincere and purposeful to put effective electoral and constitutional changes immediately in place?
The once-in-five-year-ballot to determine who heads the management of the country is not Democracy complete. It is but one single step in a system of governance, which should involve broad-based and continuing participation of all citizens and their Organisations in the management and decision-making of their country.
Imagine if the Government keeps its promise to make Guyana a truly inclusionary democracy, the population may never have to suffer the same fate as it did in 2020. And after five decades of managing its affairs, Guyanese deserve a country shaped by the commendable Principles and Bases of Political, Economic and Social system as stated in the Constitution. Would this not be better reward for the nation?
Those who selflessly joined the fight for the right election result, did not do so for an award, which may end up as a token appreciation. They believed that they were defending the right of every valid vote to be valued, which is an important development in a democratic state. The best reward for them would be if further steps are taken towards an inclusionary DEMOCRACY.
The seedling of Democracy in Guyana has begun to grow. The heroes of 2020 would be better served if the seedling is nurtured to make future Guyana the place from which they will never uproot.
Yours sincerely
Faiyaz Alli

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Government, Guyanese leaders, and the Guyanese people had better come quickly to their senses about Surinam.
