Dear Editor,
Guyana is blessed with a wide range of fruits and vegetables, (we don’t consume imported grapes to any large degree); however, our diet has always been, and will always be primarily starch and carbohydrates. A cursory look at pictures in the paper or observing citizens walking on our streets, clearly shows a majority of the population are overweight, and on the verge of becoming diabetic, primarily the women. (That includes the 20 something year olds). Interestingly, there are abandoned open exercise/football fields all over the country. To expect the workforce of some ministry to consistently keep the grass manicured in these abandoned spots so they are usable at all times is wishful thinking. It will never happen. The solution is for selected residents in these communities to be given the tools, by the Government – like drivable lawn mowers and other minor accessories to maintain them, and that is; in addition to creating more open green spaces. One also sees a business growing for repairing and maintaining these drivable lawn mowers. Will it be difficult for a neighbourhood group to come together and get this done? We all can’t go to the National Park, or drive to far reaching gyms. As more and more business foreigners relocate to Guyana, these multi-purpose open green spots are not only expected but standard features in all of their countries. Therefore, this modern transition we are expecting should include more emphasis on developing green spaces within neighbourhoods, managed by the local community.
A modern transition is not possible in this world if it’s all about concrete, concrete and more concrete structures.
