Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – Please permit me a space in your letter column. I am a very concerned and law-abiding citizen. I am very dissatisfied with the action of the police especially in Region 2. The police are targeting the poor and weak and they are very biased and show favouritism in the execution of their duties.
The criminals are attacking citizens and the police are doing nothing about it. The police can be seen daily in the drugs yards and hanging out with dealers in public. This is clear that the police are part and parcel of promoting illegal business in the region. The Guyana Police Force is moving away from their motto to SERVE and PROTECT, they are becoming more corrupt daily and that is the main reason for the high crime rate in the country. Essequibo was always known to be the most quiet and peaceful region, but with the Force getting more corrupt, we are fearful for our lives, families and businesses.
Business owners are afraid to open late; citizens are scared of taking an afternoon walk or evening stroll. We cannot sleep peacefully at nights. We have lost all trust and confidence in the police. There are so many robberies in this region, ranging from snatching of purse to armed robberies. People being killed for their honest earnings and police are dragging their feet on most of these issues because they are associated with the criminals.
Public-spirit citizens are apprehending most of the criminals and the police are wasting taxpayers’ money driving around. I am pleading with the President who I have faith in and the Minister of Home Affairs and Commissioner of Police to do something to curb this situation. It is time to go back to the drawing board and come up with a solution. It’s time for strategic planning. We need this lawlessness to stop. I would like to know that persons are granted firearm licences so that they can help protect themselves, families and business. The police gates are padlocked as soon as the sun sets. They are more fearful than civilians are. This needs urgent attention. The President, Minister of Security, Commissioner of Police and the Crime Chief need to do the right thing and come up with a solution.
Yours sincerely,
Anil Singh
