Amsterdam’s fight stopped in 2nd round due to nasty cut

Kaieteur News – Guyanese Desmond Amsterdam (75kg) came up yesterday against Mirsharif Kazimzade in his opening bout of the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships which is being held at Stark arena in Belgrade, Serbia.

Unfortunately, the Guyanese suffered a nasty cut over his eye and the Ring Doctor was forced to stop the fight; giving the Iranian Mirsharif the win by split decision. Meanwhile Coach Terrence Poole, GBA’s Technical Director, said that the fight was stopped because of the rules; they went to the score cards and the Guyanese lost by split decision.
“The fight was going Guyana’s way until the stoppage came. So it was a bit of hard luck for Desmond Amsterdam and by extension Guyana. But that’s how the game goes we have to put it behind us and move forward from here,” said Poole.
He informed that Keevin Allicock, despite him losing by a unanimous decision, was very competitive and it was a close fight.
“Keevin had some moments in the bout but he has some areas that he has to go back home work on which would be being a bit more aggressive from the beginning of the bout which would do him well in the near future in his amateur career. Desmond also has some work to when he gets back home but that cut was very nasty and really affected him, the blood was just oozing down into his eyes,” continued Poole who informed the trio will leave Siberia on November 8, 2021 to return home.
