Green Machine makes it to the second round following mixed results

Kaieteur News – Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Rugby Team; the ‘Green Machine’, began their quest to reclaim the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens title yesterday in Turks & Caicos with mixed results in their opening two matches at Meridian Fields, but still made it to the knockout round.

The Green Machine has made it to the second round of the 2021 RAN Sevens tourney.

In their opening match, the local ruggers were pitted against Belieze and after going 15 points up, the Belizeans notched their first international try but that jubilation was short-lived as the Guyanese made light work of them with a dominating 36-5 victory.
The Guyanese were brought down a peg against Bermuda in their second group match of the day when they fell to Bermudans 15-7. Less than one minute remained when Skipper Jamal Angus completed a move the length of the field to score the Green Machine’s first try of the match which was converted to give them seven points, a little too late in the clash.
Also on day one, three-time consecutive champions Jamaica got on top of hosts Turks and Caicos 24-5 while the consistent Mexico team made light work of Curacao 33-0. The top two teams from each of the three pools are advancing to the Cup competition while the bottom team will play for the Plate, both beginning today.
Guyana qualified as the second team in their pool after Bermuda thrashed Belize 38-0 in their second game. For the Cup competition, the six nations that advance have been re-seeded into two pools of three and will play each of their pool opponents with the top-seeded nation in each pool advancing to the final.
Guyana are in Pool 2 along with Mexico and the BVI with the Green Machine playing their first today from 12:30hrs while their second scrums off at 14:30hrs. The final if they should make it will begin at 17:00hrs. Pool 1 includes Jamaica, Bermuda and Barbados.
This RAN Sevens tournament also serves as the qualifier for next year’s World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.
