Edghill’s Olympics campaign ends after second match

Kaieteur News – Guyana’s first Table Tennis Olympian, Chelsea Edghill, got off her maiden appearance at the quadrennial showpiece in fine style after defeating Sally Yee of Fiji 4-1 in her preliminary round match but couldn’t keep up with the pace of South Korea’s Yubin Shin in round one.
In the preliminary match at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym, Chelsea dominated and won 11-5, 4-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-8 against Yee who was in her second outing at the Olympic Games. However, in the round of 32 match, Edghill couldn’t handle the 17-year-old Korean who was lethal in a 4-0 sweep. Shin’s victories were recorded 11-7, 11-8, 11-1, 12-10.

In a statement on the official social media account of the local star, she stated that, “The Olympics has come to an end for me and all I feel is pride and humility for such an incredible experience.
I just want to say thank you! To my Sponsors, The Guyana Table Tennis Association, the Guyana Olympic Association, my supporters and above all else, my entire family, you have my gratitude.”
“To my coach Idi, you’ve been there through thick and thin and it’s with pride that I share such an experience with you. Thank you.”

Edghill continued, “To all of my fellow Guyanese, it fills my heart with joy and happiness seeing you come together to support me at a very historic moment in our history and I hope to have your continued support. Thank you so much for everything!”
Upcoming events for Guyanese athletes are as follows. In swimming, Andrew Fowler will dive into the pool at 06:00hrs local time on Tuesday, in Heat 2 of the Men’s 100m Freestyle. Aleka Persaud; Guyana’s youngest ever Olympian, will compete on July 30 at 06:25hrs local time in Heat 5 of the women’s 50m Freestyle.
The athletes will take to the track on Thursday when Jasmine Abrams runs the 100m preliminary round that runs off at 22:40hrs.
