DEAR EDITOR,
I have read the commentary, opinions and even listened to the actual statement made by Amanza on David Hinds’ programme. It is clear that she has a low opinion of the PPP’s political supporters and views those of the PNC as superior. In the best interest of social cohesion and given the racial sensitivities and political hostilities that currently exist in our society, Amanza should apologise to the PPP’s supporters or step aside. We have seen the armed conflicts during the recent elections and the violence due to the recent murders in Cotton Tree that have created a larger divide between Indian and African ethnic groups. It is irresponsible to let such racial overtones continue in the current political environment. At a minimum, the leadership of the PNC, WPA and AFC coalition should insist on a retraction of Amanza’s comment. No one can afford to fan the flames of hate in our society. The situation is far too delicate. We almost had a civil war that was being fuelled by racial hatred. Now is the time for responsible leadership. I support the calls for swift action to be taken by the ERC in this serious matter.
With concern,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
Chairman
