Inaccurate statements regarding UG’s pensions’ policy

DEAR EDITOR,

The Administration of the University of Guyana wishes to refer to an article published in your newspaper’s online edition of Sunday April 18, under the caption: “Why has the Government derecognised my status?” The references made to UG’s Pensions Policy are inaccurate and misleading and the University is therefore kindly asking for a retraction and correction accordingly. It should be noted, that the University’s Pension signatories’ policy has been significantly improved and is now more simplified, accommodating and transparent. On this basis, we note the following in relation to the changes made on November 30, 2020 to the University’s Pension Policy and by extension, the Life Certificate for Pensioners:

1. The amendment of the policy to include the use of Senior Administrative Officers of the University of Guyana or a Justice of the Peace to sign as verifiers of the Life Certificates for Pensioners, but only in instances when the pensioner is still employed at the University.

2. The amendment of the policy requirements for Life Certificates from 3 months to 6 months’ intervals.

3. The acceptance of electronic submissions of signed scanned or photographed Life Certificates for Pensioners who are still working at UG and are known to be extant.4. It should also be noted that in some cases, upon the request of UG Pensioners, University staff have made their way to pensioners’ home to render assistance and to collect the Life Certificates.
