Kaieteur News – The Guyanese contingent that are in Argentina for the final qualification tournament to make the Tokyo Olympics had a tough going yesterday after losing each of their first round knockout matches.
The four-player contingent that includes two male players in Shemar Britton and Joel Alleyne along with female players Chelsea Edghill and Natalie Cummings still have three chances remaining to make the quadrennial event since they still have to play the mixed doubles this weekend.
Edghill had the toughest loss after going down 4-3 to Mexico’s Monica Munoz. Edghill lost the first two sets before rallying back to level the score but as the match came down to the last game, Munoz prevailed and won 11-9.
Britton went down 4 – 2 (5 – 11, 11 – 8, 2 – 11, 11 – 8, 3 – 11, 3 – 11) against Paraguay’s Alejandro Toranzos.
Meanwhile, Alleyne was swept 4 – 0 (6 – 11, 5 – 11, 8 – 11, 2 – 11) to Chile’s Gustavo Gomez.
Cummings suffered a similar 4-0 defeat when she came against Lucia Cordero of Guatemala.
The team, coached by Idi Lewis, will use the next three days to prepare for the mixed doubles aspect of the tournament that gets underway this Saturday.
Play continues today and will be live streamed on the ITTF social media pages for the round of 16 and quarter finals of both men and women singles.
