All small steps to ensure proper ballot counting should be considered
Dear Editor,
The EU Election Observation Mission made several recommendations towards ensuring that future elections in Guyana end with the actual results based on votes cast.
As polling station scrutiny by the two main political parties on election day has proven to be very effective, perhaps the suggestions below should be added to the list of recommendations.
GECOM departments dealing with voters’ lists, identifying polling places, boundary settings etc, and other E-Day issues, should to be staffed with equal numbers of PPP and PNC nominated members working in self-checking teams. This should ensure year-round scrutiny.
In Guyana’s election context, any and all small steps which will assure every voter that their ballot will be properly counted should be given consideration no matter how crackpot they may sound. The end result is what matters.
