Dear Editor,
In reference to your news report (Mar 14) on the raid of businesses that allegedly violate COVID rules, why headline the arrest of the proprietor and manager of SleepIn Bar and hotel and not others.
He was not the only arrested or reported to have violated rules. In principle, I am supportive of holding account those who violate COVID or any other rules. But the authorities should allow for a little latitude in time before applying strict enforcement. It may not be possible to close a restaurant or bar at the exact moment of 9:30 PM. People may be eating or finishing up a drink and need a few extra minutes. If the proprietor or bar owner is cooperative and shows signs of closing up or enforcing the rules, then there is no need to arrest people. If the patrons or proprietor are defiant, then examples should be made of them. Were those arrested defiant? If not, then withdraw the charges. Did the proprietor of SleepIn know the bar was not closed on time? If he did not and he merely came to the bar to inquire and instruct the attendant to close shop, why the need to arrest him? He was cooperative. Were the authorities looking for publicity? Was it a PR exercise? The charge should be dismissed.
Yours truly,
Vishnu Bisram
