Kaieteur News – The Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) wishes to clarify the reason for the non-participation of its female team in the 2021 GCB’s Senior Inter-County 50 Over Tournament since facebook and some media houses have stated grossly incorrect reasons.
On February 16th Mr. Colin Stuart, TDO of the GCB emailed the Secretary of the ECB, Mr Otto Christiani informing him that the GCB cannot accommodate any team at the Hostel at LBI for the said female tournament. After consulting our Board members, Mr Christiani responded the very afternoon to Mr Stuart, citing the following reasons:
1. It is impossible for the team to travel from as far as Charity to LBI daily to play the same day using public transportation all the way, which would mean leaving Charity at 4.00am and returning at approximately 9.00pm.
2. Our Under 19 players had to endure this very schedule which was physically demanding.
3. We are talking now about females who would feel the physical effects even more.
4. Night travelling on the river is always dangerous, moreso at this time when the water is very rough.
5. The more you travel using public transportation, the more susceptible you are to pick up the COVID virus. Mind you, COVID is the reason for not making the GCB’s Hostel available.
It must be noted that Essequibo had a team in training under Coach Nankishore Andrews and Manager Debra Daniels. This team played Essequibo Eagles Male Under 19 on Saturday, February 13 and were scheduled to have extended training sessions on February 20 and 21, prior to their participation in the Inter-County Tournament.
The GCB being fully aware of this, nevertheless has opted not to grant our request but instead remove our team from the tournament, that ‘s our caring GCB.
We have noted that the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) thru’ Mr Hilbert Foster, seems to know more about our Board affairs in the past and now than we do, thus he has opined that we cannot field a team.
We know that Mr Foster has exceptional Marketing Skills and if he is so interested in Essequibo’s cricket and want to help, he can solicit sponsors to bridge the Essequibo River so that teams from all three counties can travel conveniently and we would have more Essequibo vs Berbice and Demerara matches in Essequibo.
We have always been the least of the three counties when it comes to cricket and even our outstanding achievements are downplayed. Yougeshwar Lall made 170 + in an Under 19 Inter-County match at DCC years ago which is a record but it was downplayed by the media.
Kevon Boodie made 200+ a few years ago in a Senior Inter-County 50 Over Competition which is still a record and that was also downplayed. However, these guys are Essequibians!
We do hope that the media would give this release coverage in its entirety since all that have been mentioned are facts and nothing is libelous.
